10 Early Signs of Dementia

As people age it is natural that they become somewhat forgetful or disorganized in certain areas of their life. It is also normal that they do not function on the same level as they once did. But what happens when these symptoms start to seem more severe? Could they be the symptoms of early onset dementia? Or are they just typical signs of aging?

As with most diseases, early detection of dementia can make a tremendous difference in treatment and lifespan. Therefore, I want to share with you 10 early symptoms or signs that your loved one may be suffering from this dynamic and tragic disease in the hopes that it will empower early detection and treatment.

10 Symptoms and Signs of Dementia:

1. Memory loss that effect’s one’s ability to function in daily life or activities

2. Struggling to problem solve or decline in ability to perform critical thinking

3. Struggling to commit regular activities like cooking a meal or driving a car

4. Changes in vision and depth perception

5. Struggling to read or write

6. Confusion related to date, time, or space

7. Regularly misplacing or losing things

8. Withdrawing from social situations or interaction with others

9. Changes in personality or moods (especially around sunset)

10. Poor or decreased judgment

While dementia remains a terminal diagnosis, there is unlimited potential for increasing one’s quality of life. It is critical if you suspect a friend or loved one to be suffering from this disease that you gently confront them about it to be tested. It may seem difficult, or uncomfortable but it could be the best thing you ever do for them. Early detection can add years onto one’s life through treatments and therapies.
